I am in the process of remodeling my kitchen part of which is bordered by about 15 feet of exterior wall. During the remodeling process I removed the existing plaster and discovered a fair amount of mold (most was concentrated near sink) on the exterior side of the vapor barrier. The wall construction from interior to exterior is Plaster->4 mil (or more) plastic->R13 fiberglass insulation-> Exterior plywood->building paper-> wood siding. As I understand it, this installation is correct, so I'm wondering why there is mold on the plastic and some of the insulation?
I've since removed the vapor barrier and insulation, which I plan to replace. I will seal any gaps with caulking or foam, then insulate with R-13 fiberglass and then put plastic back up. Is there any other types of insulation I should be considering? Should I consider a different type of VDR because of the mold?
Any thoughts are appreciated. |
