Rob, on looking at your wall sketch, I see you have on the outer wall a 2x4 stud, below which is a 2x4 bottom plate, 1/2" plywood plate, another 2x4 top plate, then (presumably) a short 2x4 stud (between which there is that short insulation layer shown), and finally a 2x4 bottom plate resting on the sill. Why not skip that 1/2" plywood plate and the pair of 2x4 plates on either side of it, and just run the outer wall stud down to the sill? This makes the outer side of the rim board accessible from above for insulating as part of the wall cavity, makes for less wood & the associated thermal bridging. I've attached one of the drawings I did for my house. The outer wall was done with 2x6 rather than the 2x4 in your wall, for other reasons, but it shows what I mean above.

Hi Dick: I like your wall! I am taking your advice, along with Lieber's and others, and am designing (plagurizing) a 'new' wall. I'll post a drawing once done. BTW, which drawing program did you use to create, you guessed it, your drawing? Thanks, Rob. |

Rob, I used Home Designer Pro, the subset of Chief Architect marketed by Better Homes & Gardens. I wanted a tool for laying out floor plans, and that one seemed to be a good compromise between features and cost. It worked out reasonably well for the purpose.
By the way, I had to drop that sketch into my last post as an attachment for someone to click on, whereas your drawing shows up inline. How do you do that?

To insert an image, you must click 'Add Reply', then 'Attachments', then 'Browse' (to find your file), then 'Upload', then 'Insert Image': Then select 'Upload' Then click on the image under the "Insert Image" column. You cannot use the Google Chrome browser - I switch to the FireFox browser - maybe the MS Explorer browser works also. HTH. Rob. Images cannot be larger that 100 kb. |

I tried to edit my post with the attachment, to do the "Insert Image," but I see no icon under that title to click on. I tried with this fresh post, but still after doing the Upload to get the file name into the "Current Attachments" list the only icon then available is Delete, but nothing under Create Thumbnail, Insert Image, or Display Link.

Which browser are you using? also, what is the file extension on the image file? (imagename.???)
I think that it MUST be ".jpg" |

Testing to see if an attached jpg and a pdf file will open in the window using Firefox. Edit to note that the forum allowed the option of inserting the jpg image into the post, but that option did not exist for the pdf file. |

OK, I displayed the .pdf with Adobe Reader, used IrfanView to capture the screen image, cropped the image, and saved as .jpg format. Here it is: Oh, I'm using Firefox for a browser. |

Hi Dick:
The .jpg image does not do justice to your great .pdf drawing - I guess that is the problem with 100 kb files. :)
