I was recently involved in a small one room bathroom addition to a house in Massachusetts. We installed a Fujitsu minisplit AOU12RLS2 and ASU12RLS2, which works great, even in the recent very cold weather we've had. Since the Minisplit was turned on the homeowners have complained about a faint odor in the room. The harder the Minisplit runs, the more the smell.
We had the indoor head replaced with a new one and the odor continues--no change. No heat, no smell. The smell is sort of a new construction smell, and it has not gone away since October when the heater was installed and started.
Has anyone else had this experience? Advise?

have you cleaned the filters? Any solvents or caulking used there with VOCs? |

It is a brand new unit with a new filter. We did replace the filter but smell persists. No unusual caulks other than the usual tile, thinset, grout, paint and other normal construction materials in a bathroom. All new construction. Been done since October. Nearly certain it is the mini-split.

Heard a suggestion recently on Cartalk about finding smells: stick a rubber hose in one nostril and a wad of cotton in the other - they say it works well to pinpoint smells. The unit brings nothing in that isn't already in the room except the refrigerant, so it has to be either the filters or the motor. |

Or it could be heating the thinset or mastic that is behind the tiles if it is sitting right on the tiles. If you have changed the head, it is likely it is causing some building product to out gas faster due to heat. |
