For central Texas, what would be the best way to insulate second story interior walls that are next to uninsulated attic spaces? I have blown in cellulose in the floors of the attics already, so I'd rather not go through the effort of removing the cellulose and insulating the attic ceilings. Thanks! |

I think people will be better able to provide you with suggestions if you provide more details like size of wall cavity, will you have exterior foam, etc. |

Just normal 2x4 construction. The walls haven't been built yet, they are bonus room additions going in. So I'm open to any construction/insulation ideas. |

So let me see if I have this right. Your second story is, essentially, an uninsulated attic space at this point. You have BIC on the floor but no insulation anywhere else. You're basically looking to carve out a room (or rooms) from this space. Honestly, your best bet is to just insulate the roof/ceiling of the entire space. Otherwise the room will see heat gain from the roof deck. You don't need to remove the BIC. Just make sure the space is properly ventilated. Then it doesn't really matter what you put into the walls of the room itself. Indeed, you could go with something more for acoustical insulation than thermal. |

Yeah basically let's just say you're building a bonus room in an uninsulated attic. The attic itself will be insanely hot most of the time in the Texas summers, even if you insulated the roof deck. There's gonna be some serious heat loss through the walls, I was just wondering what would be the best way to insulate the walls. Thanks. |

1" foil faced polyiso foam board (RMax R-Matte Plus 3 - made in Dallas, TX) on the outside of the studs with the foil facing out toward the attic, HVAC duct foil tape all joints, then damp sprayed cellulose in the stud cavities. |

Do you have the possibility to maximize your ventilation in the attic? If you figure out your maximum lower vent area in the soffits then you can figure out how much additional venting can be added for your ridge vent or whatever vent type you have in your roof. Our 2nd floor interior attic walls are 2x4 framed and sheathed with 2" EPS foam/OSB/r-13 batts. |

The roof has a full length ridge vent, and soffits. Basically 2:1 length ratio, soffit:ridge vent |
