I’ve been reviewing emergency exit maps in different workplaces and noticed something that keeps coming up. In many cases, the maps were created correctly and approved at the time, but the physical layout of the space has changed since then. Equipment moves, partitions get added, and work areas are adjusted, while the posted evacuation maps often remain unchanged. From what I’ve seen, this isn’t due to a lack of concern for safety. Updating maps just doesn’t always fit easily into day-to-day operations, especially once a facility is already in use. During drills or walkthroughs, this can sometimes lead to brief uncertainty about routes or exits. I’m mainly interested in understanding how others approach this over the long term. This post is focused specifically on emergency exit and evacuation maps, not broader safety systems. Thanks to anyone willing to share experiences or insights.
