Do I need to have an engineer look at my foundation plan?  I'd like to put  a large egress window in our basement (the opening would be 3 casement windows mulled together equalling 9' in width).  I'd like to hold it up as high as I can to get at least a foot above grade for light, and figured I'd add an indeck microlam in place of the rimjoist to carry the load (no concrete over the window)  This window sits 1'  from an outside corner and  I'm beginning to have questions about the strength of that corner.  This is a full basement, 8' walls, clay soil, on top of a hill.
Thanks.

Planning on building my first new home soon.  Looking at using ICF's, but trying to find out if they are hud approved, if there are any downsides to building this way?  any information would be very helpful.

Tokanuwan,
I don't know about the HUD approval.  I'm using ICF's for my foundation only, and then going up from there with SIPs.  This is probably due to my comfort level being with wood framing and not concrete, talk to a bridge engineer and he'll remind you of the 3 little pigs story (at least that's how it worked for me)

You're at the right place.  I spent hours reading through all the ICF posts on this site.  I found both encouraging posts and frightening points (search: graveling).

Having never poured a foundation, let alone an ICF foundation I am approaching this armed with as much information as I can, plus the help of a seasoned conventional foundation contractor.

I'm starting my form set tomorrow, check the progress if you want as I'll try to post daily pics.

Best of luck and don't give up.  I think ICF's are one good way to build, just pay attention to the details... just like anything else.

Ben
