Hello, I'm an 100% newbie to this forum. Today while drilling a 4 inch hole through my ICF wall i cut a piece the horizontal rebar from the row about 1 foot above ground level. I'm already worried about this. Can it be mitigated? Thank you for any professional response. |

I don't think its really something to sweat over. Having a break in the rebar1 foot off the ground isn't going to have a significant impact (if any) in the structural integrity of your wall. - Pete |

Ya, no big deal. Ideally you would take down the wall and put in a bent bar which dodges the hole, but so close to the slab it wouldn't do much good anyway. |

MGC67, I agree with pc - there is very little collateral damage in the dissection of one horizontal rebar - next time have a complete pre-pour check list that address wall penetrations. I am a newbie to the forum too - Hi all |

There really is not enough info to determine if the integrity will be comprimised. Although I would tend to agree with Pete I would want to know things like: 1. how tall is the wall? 2. how thick is the core of concrete going to be? 3. what is the rebar schedule? 4. what will the compressive strenghth of the concrete be? 5. where in the wall is the hole located other than how high up? etc. On a 10,000 sq. ft. structure 3 stories with concrete floors and a concrete roof it could be cause for concern...on a small rambler not too much to concern yourself with there.
A pre-pour check list that stays on the jobsite is the way to go. It is an effective way to keep track of what has been addressed so there is no question.
I hope this helps...good luck and welcome to the forum!

Thanks for all of your replies.
Actually the hole is one row above ground. I did not mention that it's a ranch ICF home with a basement. So, actually the hole is about 9 feet off of the slab (10 ft from the top), so pretty much in the middle of the height. It's on a 50 wide wall about 8 feet from an inside corner. My house was built with Reward (e-forms) they are the "post n' beam waffle grid pattern" that they don't make anymore..., 6" thick at the core locations, thinner in the other areas. All of the cores have rebar in them and I think it was every other row for the horizontals. Pretty much 1/2 rebar was used through out i believe. I've come to the conclusion there is nothing i could really do to mitigate a future problem from my gaff. I would put more sleeves if I were to do another home. I'm not a professional, i was a do-it-yourselfer so that may be part of the problem!! :)
Thanks again for all of your thoughts, I will for sure have more post (questions) in the future!! |
