Is it possible to use ICF's underground? What method of waterproofing and protectioin is neccessary? I'm in SW Missouri and considering building a mostly underground home.  From my research the ICF's and a concrete flat roof appears to be the most cost effective means of construction. Call me silly, but the storms out here are scary!

Sure. I am in the planning stage as well for a project to build a completely below ground level 8' x 12' 'saferoom as an outbuilding (not attached to my main residence). The manufacturer I am leaning towards is Poly Steel, but have not ruled out Quad-Lock. Apparently there is a membrane that goes over the structure kind of like plastice wrap. My main concern is moisture and water getting into the structure. I also have an excavation issue due to tight confines (another story for another time).

My plan to combate the water and potential for leakage is obviously to use the manufacturer recommended sealing process (membrane or spary on sealant or whatever), and then install a 'french drain' on the ourside of the structure near the footers. Vertically above the horizontal drain pipes I will have rocks held against the structure by some sort of landscaping fabric to keep the dirt out of the drain. I might also enlist the use of a basin and electric pump if the soil conditions that far below are not adaquate enought to absord the run off as I have this issue in other areas of my yard. I will need to make sure that I have access to the pumb in case in needs to be changes at any time in the future.

OK, the question is a little vague, but I sincerely encourage you both to read thru the off pages on this site! Yes, ICFs for foundations all day, every day...the waterproofing issue is discussed...in fact every facet of ICF construction is posted and discussed by numerous people on this site AND the links to other sites keep providing more and more info!!

Please, read up and do a little homework, then jump in to ask about things that concern you. You may be able to do this as a DIY, or you may decide to have someone help you. Either way, it is a good thing to read up so you have a good idea of how this technology works!
