I am planning a 20'X30' post and beam addition to our house.  I intend to use slab on grade as a foundation and floor however the distance from grade to the existing first floor is about 2 feet.  So the choice is either build up 2 ft to make the floors level or have a couple of steps down to the addition from the old house.  My preference is to have the floors at the same level.  The soil is very sandy for at least 6' down.

Am I going to pay a lot to build the slab up 2' from grade?

Ron, your slab will likely be 4" thick and quite possibly this will be on 2" of foam. Around here we usually use 4" of rock below the foam too. So your extra fill might only be 14". Of course, it all depends on how much topsoil needs to be removed and whether you need the rock (since you have sandy soil) and whether you use the foam. But in the end it's only a small area (600 square ft) and the fill is , well..... dirt cheap. So if you want the floor on the same level it shouldn't cost that much.
