On another thread I was told that Tyvek is perfectly fine to be used instead of fast-foot for DIY monolithic ICF with footings. One question that I have is this: Is Tyvek a moisture barrier that will keep water from wicking into the concrete? If it isn't, could I use just some cheap plastic sheathing on the outside of the Tyvek and that would make my footing waterproof? I guess my concern is if moisture gets trapped behing the tyvek. I plan on having perf pipe for drainage around the footings.
Thanks

I have used tyvek on footings many times without an incidents or reprecussions. When I peel the footing boards off the tyvek lays down and the ground. I'm going to take a wild guess and say you could use plastic, issue being is strength, tyvek won't tear under the weight/pressure from the concrete being placed, plastic will over stretch or tear, not defeating the purpose 100%, but not as good as tyvek.

Chris,
I guess I wasn't very clear on what I'm doing. But I plan on following this method here http://www.fab-form.com/products/fastfoot/mono-pour_menzel.html only instead of fast-foot I am going to use tyvek.
Fast-foot stays in place after construction and is supposed to be a wicking barrier between the concrete and the soil. I think this sounds nice, and I am just wondering if Tyvek will do the same thing and prevent moisture from wicking into the concrete if left in place. If not, if I wrap the footing with plastic, then wrap the plastic with tyvek, can I accomplish the same thing? Tyvek to hold the concrete pressure, plastic to keep moisture out of the footing concrete.
Thanks for you help! |
