Hello!

In reading about various types of ICF blocks, I learned that, in addition to the "standard" blocks, there are also waffle pattern blocks, where the poured concrete takes the form of a huge waffle, thinner in some areas, thicker in others, and screen grid blocks, where there are actually "open" areas in the poured concrete.

I was wondering about the purposes/advantages of the latter two systems. With the standard style, voids in the concrete are to be avoided at all costs. But with the waffle pattern and especially the screen grid styles, it seems that there are deliberately thin spots and voids created.

What's the deal? Also, how commonly used are the waffle and screen styles?

DABA78,

I prefer a solid wall below grade.  Building above grade and not in tornado alley opens the possibility to various types of building systems.

Thanks for the reply, Alton.

I understand better now...solid wall below grade for maximum resistance to water infiltration. But above grade, a well-installed waffle pattern or screen grid  can be very sound in comparison to conventional framing.

Do not purchase a waffle=grid system only to save a couple yards of concrete! As all concrete buildings are stronger than wood, compare the products based on your locale, building requirements, tech/field support and installation practices!

Thanks for the input, Jim.

We're close to purchasing an ICF home which was built with Amvic flat style blocks, but I just got to wondering about the other two types, since voids in the flat style are to be avoided at all costs, and the other types end up with walls where the concrete is thinner in areas, or in the case of screen grid walls, has openings throughout.

Of course, I suppose that the waffle and screen styles are designed that way, but still, seems like the finished product wouldn't differ much from a flat style with a few voids.
