I have read 'some' threads regarding this topic without much definitive answers. If I have a TF verticle system with 4" foam on the exterior and want HardiPlank siding, do I need to put a housewrap on before the siding goes on? I live in northern Maine.

I do not believe you need a housewrap but you may need a rainscreen so the Hardi-plank will last longer.

The main portions of wall will definitely not be a problem (it rarely is). You need to make sure flashing details are good around windows and doors.

Newbie,

I agree with Alton and John. The need for house wrap is not for the traditional need that a wood house needs house wrap, vapor control and air infiltration. Detailing your window and door openings is very simple with a house wrap plus you get a warranty with some of the better products. You can detail your widows and doors with good old flashing but in my experience is is simple and easier with a house wrap.

The second reason I use a house wrap is this. With an ICF building you are moving the dew point of the building envelope to the exterior portion of the foam unlike a wood home where the dew point is in the middle of the wall cavity. This, over time, contributes to moisture behind your siding. If you want your siding to last, you must give this moisture every opprtunity to exit. I am a firm believer that if I am building a 100 year+ building, then I should make sure all of my ancillary processes will stand the test of time. That is why I use a nonlinear drain wrap, like DuPont's DrainWrap behind all of my horizontal siding.

ICFContractor,

So your saying in your opinion that it would be a good idea to use a product like Duponts DrainWrap behind my Hardiplank siding.

I DO want my home to last 100+ years.

The price is small so if it can help, im all over it.

My question is this Mr ICFContractor, how to you attatch your DrainWrap to the ICF?

Thanks
