This is my first post to this forum, however I have been reading over the postings for some time. My wife and I are building a custom home and are dedicated to using ICF in the construction of our home. Aesthetically speaking our house is very modern in its design and one of the features we had incorporated into the design is concrete floors for the second story and a concrete, low sloped roof. After spending considerably amount of time researching the various systems available I came upon Ecospan, a subsiduary of Vulcraft. I had originally started with the idea of using the Insul-Deck system, or similar, however the spans in our design made this impractical. I then looked at Hambro and Speed Floor, when I came across Ecospan and my further research indicated it work well with our design. I wanted to know if anyone has used the Ecospan system in an ICF structure and if so what was your impression of the system.

Here is the link to Ecospan website:

Thanks

I have not used this particular system.  I have used bar joists for roofs.  Be aware that vibration can be a problem for bar joists with a thin concrete deck in the 28' span length range.  Partitions, furnishings and thicker concrete can dampen the vibration.

This may be a great system to use.  By the way, bar joists are usually so hard that drywall is not screwed directly to the bottom chord.  On my project, we bolted 2x4's to the bottom chord and then attached the ceiling drywall.

Have you looked at Metwood Building Solutions:  www.metwood.com    This system uses a softer metal that will accept screws.  The structural engineer at this company can stamp and seal the plans to meet the code.

I do not sell any products.  I do donate a lot of time to interesting projects.

I looked up speed floor and it looks very interesting. I imagine you can screw directly to the cold formed steel joist bottom chord and eliminate the need for blocking as well?

According to Ecospan you could anchor directly to the bottom, but generally they recommend a drop type system, which could be gyp board or other.

Actually we are not installing any ceiling in favor of an industrial kind of look.

rmknecht,

We have used Eco-Span on a 4 story 16 unit ICF condo. It is a good system, the tech support was great and we definately would use it again in a similar structure. If you want some more info or pictures send me a PM or email.
