Looking at options for a two story, eight classroom addition to a high school in Massachusetts. Can anyone give me examples of ICF public school projects - preferably in MA, or in New England.

ICF's look like a perfect application here with a fast schedule, simple double loaded corridor with four CR's over four CR's, and probably winter pour. Thinking of conrete plank on ICF's for both second floor and roof. Any similar schools would be a real help.

Thanks

Birdman,

I don't know if you will be able to find any ICF schools that have been built in MA or New England, but there is on in PA! Check out Clearview Elementary in this article http://leedcasestudies.usgbc.org/overview.cfm?ProjectID=100

Also, look at Warren Co, KY, they have the most in the US by far. Look at Alvaton Elementary, Elrod Road Elementary, Richardsville Elementary School (first net zero elementary school in the US). Sherman Carter Barnhart has designed the most ICF schools and have the design needs down to a science. I would recommend you advise the school board to consult with them. They are now able to design net zero energy ICF schools pretty inexpensively (like $180.00 a sqft).

You are right that they are growing in popularity nationally and really are a perfect fit. I was involved with building the first ICF school in Virginia (St. Anne's Belfield). The owners are very happy with the outcome and the energy performance is tremendous.

ICF schools are currently or have been constructed in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Tennesse, Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, Texas, Kansas, Colorado and Arizona. I am not familiar with any schools being constructed in MA or the northeast. ICFs and hollow core plank have been used very successfully in a variety of multi story applications (schools, condominiums, hotels, office buildings, etc.).

Birdman,

There was a school project completed in Hyde Park that used NUDURA Insulated Concrete Forms - The above noted schools, Alvaton and Richardsville were also built with NUDURA. Hope this helps.

Seems to me that many, if not most, schools in recent years have been built with NUDURA ICFs. You might contact them for their input; they'd certainly know if there is an ICF school near you. http://www.nudura.com/en/icfdesignresources.aspx
Good luck,
Felix

Hi Birdman,

I'm a distributor of Nudura's ICF system and in 2008/2009 supplied and assisted in the supervision of the construction of a single story addition to the Roosevelt Elementary School in Hyde Park, MA.

It received a Gold rating from the USGBC and for further information you can contact me at [email protected].
