This is actually after the fact, but just in case I build ICF homes for the rest of the family...

Using Logix ICFs we're building a two level home.  The basement level is 8" core forms and using a hybrid tapered block on the top 8" course to provide a ledge for our floor trusses.  Our ICF rep recommended we put on our first course of 4" blocks so that we'd have solid walls and dimensions for installing the trusses.

We used right angle brackets (wood cleats made of 2x4 and 1x4) every few feet to support the interior side of the 4" to the top of the 8".  The fun part was that we actually followed the concrete pump crew around the scaffolding attaching the 4" blocks, thus allowing them to have access to the 8" blocks during the main pour, which they certainly liked.  The idea worked but wasn't as level, plumb, and straight as I would have liked.

What other methods have folks used to transition from one size to another (aside from Nudura's transition clip -- should have grabbed a bunch of those!)

Thanks,
Tony

Tony, I was going to suggest the Nudura bracket - it does work really well. However, you can accomplish the same results using wood - it's just a bit more involved. Take a 2x and rip to size so that you can screw to the furring strip of the smaller block - then you can run your "preferably" steel C-channel or stiff-back dead plumb up the wall. Regards.

We often go from a 10" core to a 6" core for brick ledges or to transition from basements to first floor on commercial buildings. We use a Taper Top form on the lower course. All you have to do is set a small block of cast off EPS on top of the cross tie on the lower course to support the upper and narrower course. When properly installed, the bracing keeps everything plumb. Contact me off-line and I'll provide pictures.
