We are building an ICF home in West Plains, MO and have a builder lined up who has experience building ICF but has not done a concrete roof. Would like an architect with some knowledge and ideas in regard to this.

I know from experience that finding a contractor who does residential concrete roofs will be difficult if not impossible. I would tap into commercial contractors and see if you can find something.

Agree very difficult in our area to find a residential contractor familiar with a concrete roof. We did ours ourselves using Quaddeck. Was a little concerned on the day we poured that I may have missed something, but all went well. Also well worth it - very quiet, sealed house.

I do concrete roof and decks, and it isn't a big deal. Starting one in Perry, Oklahoma, next week that will have a 2-1/2 / 12 gabled roof using 12 inch BuildDeck and clearspan of 36 feet. Some ICF suppliers will actually get an engineer to look at your plan and do a prescriptive design..

Or, an ICF contractor can get an assist with going to the next level. Most of the resistance to concrete roofs and decks come from reluctant contractors unwilling to learn anything new. Tradition is hard to break.

Did you have an architect draw up the plans? We have a contractor willing to do it. We wouldn't mind having an engineer to go over the plans either.

Thanks for the input. It's clear from following similar threads on this site, that folks are out there doing this successfully. The Quad Deck, BuildDeck, Amdeck websites are full of just the kind of examples that fall in line with what we are looking for. Our contractor is capable, uses Nudura, and works with a skilled draftsman who does a great job with standard ICF walls, etc. Once we start talking about an ICF roof, there seems to be more reluctance; not so much that he doesn't want to or won't but more along the line of "how?" How did you get from typical truss roof drawings to "instead, here's what I want my ICF roof to look like"? A 36' clearspan is clearly pushing it out there, so there had to be some serious thought on the front end. Who did that part? For the ICF manufactures that do offer engineering services, I assume they require more than concept drawings or formal plans of the walls only. This is the step that I'd really be interested in hearing from folks who can point to successful projects that have employed a full concrete shell.

Beanie, You have a 36' clear span but what is the dimension in the other direction to a load bearing wall?

And you could have your builder call me and ask questions. I do this for contractors every month. He could come watch us do one, and then it would be crystal clear. I just ran 2400 sq ft of LiteDeck yesterday, and you can see videos of the pour on facebook Ladwig Construction
