No one is crazy for wanting and energy efficient structure. We design, engineer, and install structures like the one you plan on building all the time. I know that there has been a lot of talk on this site about how expensive SIP’s are but around here our bids are in line with 2x6 construction for SIP walls and truss roof. SIP roofs are an upgrade and are not a simple decision for owners but this is addressed elsewhere.
A project like yours is a simple “bread and butter” project for a firm similar to ours. An economical and energy efficient design would be nothing out of the ordinary. Unfortunately, most firms like ours do not access this site so you will be lucky to find one in your area that does. Start by calling local architects and builders and asking what they know about SIPs and green building. When you find one, ask if they do the engineering in house. Most outside structural engineers are not comfortable with a building without wood or steel studs, which is why so many SIP buildings get built with 2x splines (expensive, unnecessary, low “R” value, expansion problems, etc.). If they insist on using 2x splines keep looking. Good Luck.
Also, you may need to install type “X” GWB in the garage for fire reasons depending on how your local building department categorizes the building.
