We plan to install cedar (yes, real material) b&Batten on sips walls.  Western Red Cedar Assn strongly advises nailing siding into solid material, not just sheathing.

We will, of course first install proper membrane; probably 15lb felt, as tyvek's known to deteriorate in exposure to cedar tannins.  And proper peel-and-stick at all windows, etc.

Nailing to solid material: in conventional framing we could add horiz blocking in wall at 2' oc.  With sips, we could add strapping at 2' oc on top of paper.  This is extra work, and requires fatter trim details (any ideas regarding trim?)

Any comments, experience, pos or neg. for nailing only to sheathing?  Thanks.  Dan

Most SIP manufacturers can embed a 2x nailer within a panel. So, you'd have something solid to nail into. Top plate, bottom plate and however many that you'd be comfortable with in the middle. But remember, Wood Bad, Foam Good!

Ring shank nails or screws are a must.

Add the strapping. Not just for nailing purposes, but also for ventilation. This space allows for air movement and drying of your cedar siding. This is good for the life expectancy of your siding. The extra attention to the essential detail will greatly extend the lifespan of the siding and any finishes you apply to it. Also, don't forget to prime your siding on ALL sides before installation.
And it is a good idea to put saw kerfs on the back side of the horizontal strapping so moisture can drain down and out rather standing on the top surfaces of the strapping.
