    I just had a (MetaL) Roofing Representative tell one of my people that "none of the roofing manufacturers will guarantee a roof on SIP panels" !
Is this ever true?  He was quoting things from buildingscience.com and talking about Unvented Roofs, Mold issues, and Overheating.  The project we're looking at using SIP on is a little fire station.  We're not in an extreeme climate like Texas or Canada.  What can they be talking about?

Thanks

D;

Some asphalt shingle manufacturers will not warrant their product over any unvented system including SIPs , but you need to check with the mfg., Their claim is that they cook faster and degrade  10-15% quicker , although I don't know if they have really substantiated that claim.
Last I knew Elk still warrants their shingle over SIPs and unvented roofs.
I do not know what kind of concern metal or cement tile over SIPs would be?
Gerard roofing, a stone coated steel shingle roof is approved over SIPs

Did you ever try to make a claim against a shingle manufacturer anyway? Good Luck!

D,

I don't know a lot about metal roofs, but when I put one on my house (ordinary stick built), one of the big selling points to me was that the metal will actually reflect as much as 72% (it was several years ago so I might be off a bit on the percentage) of the radiant solar energy. The old asphalt roof would get blistering hot in the 105 to 110 degree sunny summer days, but not the metal roof. It cooled the interior of the house as well.

We have been building Steel SIPs homes and additions in central florida for a few years,and we have attached shingles and steel roofing with out any problems,even though shingles must be glued down to the steel deck,as per our engineer guidelines,Hope this helps,Ralph locke LINK 352-669-1755

I installed a 40 yr Elk product un-vented on a SIP roof. Elk warrants it, and the SIP manufacturer also endorsed it. However, check with your SIP manufacturer and your shingle manufacturer.
