I am building an addition to my home and am considering using sips. but have been wrestling with the various details, lighting being one of them. My proposed solution would be to take advantage of the smaller roof thickness that sips requires and underframe a ceiling with a metal t grid system. Any competent drywall contractor can do it, the additional weight is negligible, and gives you unobstructed space for lighting, wiring, speakers, sprinklers etc. |

Rcoulter,
Are your referring to using a suspended ceiling with removable acoustical tiles? If so, just curious as to which rooms would have this type of ceiling. |

Chris,
What is the gauge of the steel skins on the panels that you use to support the light gauge steel framing? Will this attachment support drywall and HVAC ductwork? What size and how many screws would it take to support drywall and ductwork? I am just trying to get a feel for the amount of materials and labor it would take to use this method. This way would eliminate cutting holes through the ceiling panels for recessed lights. |

Alton; skin is 26 ga. , typical 25 ga. stud track to ceiling screwed @ 24" (stud location) w/ 2-#8 x 9/16" sharp point wafer head screws. It will support drywall / duct work |

Alton, I have a lot of pics of light gauge metal framing, but it wont let me attach them here, the file size is too big, but i would be happy to email them if you would like. We do a lot of this and have some details that may be very helpful. |

UPDATE:
Well my new home is well underway and I am, happy to say it is built with SIPS. The walls are any whey. The whole recessed lights in SIPs thing got too complicated so I went with SIP walls and stick framed roof. We just had 4" + of open cell foam sprayed on the underside of the roof deck and I must say this is one tight house!!! Once I get it finished, hopefully in about three months, and get a few utility bills behind me I'll try to get an update out on how efficient it reall is. Thanks for all the help, now it's back to work getting this house finished. |

Chris,
A picture is worth a thousand words. Thanks.
Rcoulter,
If you do not mind, please send me some pictures of light-gauge metal framing. My e-mail address is in my signature block. Use the at symbol and period like in any e-mail address. I write it this way because of the following in the rules of GreenBuilding Talk:
No e-mail addresses in posts Please do not include your e-mail address in your posts. There are automatic programs called "bots" that will sift through all posts if there are e-mail addresses. They gather them for the spammers, and can overload our server making it unavailable to legitimate users.

Alton;
The forum hosts called me about a year ago and asked not to post a web site , but they said I could post my e mail address?
I see many with both, I imagine it is a monumental task for them to stay on top of it all |

Chris,
What I have noticed is that I have gotten a lot more spam since I started participating in this forum. So far, I have not come up with a way to reduce the spam. |

I've also seen details where you add 2x's to the SIP panels and then drywall on the bottom of the 2x's. This gives you a cavity for the recessed lighting (and other things) without cutting into the SIPs. |

If a user gives an unaffiliated referral to a website for informational purposes, we will leave it posted. Users may add their website address to their GreenBuildingTalk profile. What isn't allowed is blatant advertising of one's product, website or business. GreenBuildingTalk offers marketing packages and a Professional Directory for those users that are looking to increase the visibility of their product or business.
As for email addresses, we have stressed in the Rules for GreenBuildingTalk that there are bots that collect email addresses for spammers. Not only will users receive more spam, but the bots may overload our server, making it unavailable for legitimate users. We strongly suggest that you write out your email address, as Alton has done. All user information is confidential, and we do not sell nor trade any user information. I hope this clears up any confusion.
Thanks,
