Has anybody seen the ZIP System roof and wall OSB panels with the water resistant barrier?  I guess you don't need housewrap or felt.  You just tape the seams.  Is there any reason why these panels could not be used in a SIPS application?

Yes;

we have seen it ...........they are made by HUBER who also makes Advantech OSB guaranteed to take up to 300 days of weather before it gets covered up
Unfortunately for this owner/builder,  the Advantech SIP panels already had a 1/4" warp as they came fresh out of the wrapper and only got worse when it got wet
after just 7 days exposure ,the owner is now trying to get the MFG. to honor the warranty and sand all the joints flat

That jobsite looks like a real mess. I know you dont work like that.
Who was responsible for installing those panels ?
Doesnt look like a very professional installation crew was used. No panel can be expected to
compensate for sloppy work and poor care was my first thought. Even an standard SIPS OSB
panel wont do that if handled/stored properly on pre-install and installed properly I would guess.

The other thing I was thinking is why trust a manufacturers 'waterproof barrier' and tape when the
old fashioned manual wrap process use on a zillion homes is so well tested and works so well.
It cant save that much money or time really.

Mark;

Its amazing you can determine the quality of an install without seeng the structure?
We did do the install and the mess as seen in the back ground is the owner's foundation materials, not ours , we picked up after ourselves daily.
The panels were stored on flat and level ground before installed. I cannot say that the mfg. transit company took the same care ,as some panels fell off the back of the truck during transit.
Every panel was cupped before it was installed
It was the same mfg. we posted previously with the spline problems

I would hate to imagine what it would be like if we only trusted the "old fashion process."  It just seems to me that taping the seams one time is much easier than putting up wrap and then taping the seams.  And then, in most cases there will be some sort of rework with the wrap.  Plus, the ZIP panels just add some nice curb appeal during the construction process.

t4s;

I am a proponent for new innovative products, but based on the other HUBER products lack of good results, I  question the stated performance of their all their new product lines.

I'm sure most would agree that Huber's Advantech is the best OSB subfloor on the market.  I'm sure Huber is only selling OSB to a SIPs manufacturer for use as a skin.  Do you think the problems were a result of the OSB or adhesive failure by the SIPs mfr?  Either way, from a green building perspective it seems like the ZIP product has at the very least less material waste when compared to housewraps.

the failure was not in the adhesive, I think the failure was two fold the  - SIP mfg. produced panels with a "cup" and when the seams got wet twice, the OSB began to swell and swell and swell.
Huber does make the Advantech with sealed edges or without, the sip mfg. choose the cheap way out and used the raw edge skins.
