Whether it's by choice or necessity because of what's available locally, the question was specific to OSB based SIPs: Does anyone live in an OSB SIPs house an area where rodents are a problem? If so, have you had any problems with them abusing the SIPs?

We live in a OSB sip home. The mice start trying to get in in October.
We had mice get into the crawl space the first winter. They made an effort to go up and into the outside walls through the openings that had been drilled for wiring. We spray foamed the holes and never had another problem.
We have had an extra panel sitting outside for 6 years. No insect or mouse intrusion into the panel. We have mice in the garage (non sip) in the guest cabin(non sip) and everywhere else they can get in. They are not in the OSB SIP walls.
Any SIP( metal or OSB) will get mouse intrusions if there are holes for them to enter. |

Thank you Jmagill for your a well-grounded answer !
By the way my question is still opened. I invite everybody who knows about the subject from him/herself life experiences, unlike supposed by constructive features, tell about ones .

I have had five mice, three voles, and several frogs in my steel sip home. BUT THEY WERE BROUGHT IN BY MY CAT! Not once have I had insects or critters or anything come into my home unless it came in through the front door on a pet or already in a box. |

The Titanwall Sips is another great product to resist critters! The ceramic coating is almost impossible for them to get through as long as the joints are assembled properly! My choice to build with in a northern climate like Canada. Have a look if you need something fire/mold/critter/water resistant! |

Alex -
You will not likely find anyone on this board that has the problem you are inquiring about. There just aren't enough people familiar with this site to get a good sampling of homeowners with the various "problems". Realistically, anything that can be breached by mice, rats, etc., could be vulnerable, not necessarily that thay are going to be. Over time, lumber based products can be vulnerable, threfore a continuous barier of structural wall (??) i.e. steel sips or concrete would inhibit rodents. Although, certain tyes of mice do have a tendancy to burrow under the walls and can fit through any opening the size of a quarter.
If you are concerned wit the home you currently live in or are looking to buy, wood/eps SIPS would not attract any more infestation than say 2x4 lumber construction, but would be susceptible to breach.
Really, mice are looking for warmth & food. They will not completely destroy your structural walls like termites will do. mice eat food crumbs and in trash recepticles. More than likely, they will chew through your walls to get inside the house, not treat your walls as a "mouse motel" or as a source of nutrition.
Recommendation: LOTS OF MOUSE TRAPS!!!! just kidding
Check with your home builder to see what they say, and get regular annual/semi-annual inspections.

I'm going to venture a guess that traditional construction methods where Alex is would not be 2 x 4 lumber, but rather would include mass walls - either cast concrete, aerated concrete, stone, or load-bearing brick. So, in that context, the move to OSB panels with soft foam inside would naturally give one concern about critters. |
