Hi Lisa,

Do you mean "ZIP System", Huber's house-wrap impregnated OSB product, or a "SIP system"? Just curious since this is the SIP message board.

I put a metal roof over top of my SIP roof. I used standard trusses and place the SIPs over top of that. I then completely sealed the attice area and conditioned it (that is ran a supply and return into the attic). Metal on top of that. The company I used did put down water and ice shield per code and roofing material the rest of the way. It has worked pretty good.

Lisa;

If you mean SIPs yes, we do all the time

If you mean ZIPs, I think it is for walls only

Chris,
Huber does make the zip system for walls and roofs. I think there is a slight difference in composition, but I'm not sure about that.
As to using metal roofing directly over this system, I would not recommend it. No matter how waterproof the system is supposed to be, I would still prefer to have a second layer of protection available in the event of a failure.

Wes;

you are right I went and checked their web site it does say it is code approved , I am just wondering if another layer would trap condensation?

Chris,
Good question about the condensation. I would not think that a layer of underlayment would be sealed tight enough to trap any moisture that might arise between it and the sheathing. My thoughts for the underlayment were more concerning any leaks that might develop over time. Think belt and suspenders.

CHL,

I really mean ZIPS not SIPS. The house will have  an ICF basement a SIPS main floor , a timber& truss Roof with a ZIPs  roof System. I just love these acroyns!  What I saw was one (ZIPS) being put in is panels (wood structural with a built in moisture barrier that eliminates the need for felt paper). I saw guys taping the panel seams with a special tape and the installation manual says it is approved for metal tiles and panels. Also says it the ZIP roof should be covered within 120 days.

The ZIP system includes roof panels with built in Precipitek moisture barrier with pre printed fastening tape guides and the special tape  (how special I don't know but assume if it is not used the system would not be warrented).

You can't used on walls only roofs and not with slopes under 2 1/2 pitch.
You don't use H-clips they are not required by code with this product and may interfer with the tape seal.

It also says DO NOT USE WITH SIPS.  You don't apply secondary coatings or treatment to ZIP system roof panels with the exception of permable laminated radiant barrier foil, permeable radiant paint or approved fire resistant coatings applied to the overlay side of the panel.

I have been taking to some other guys and no one has hear of this or ever done a job with it. I just have an uneasy feeling without adding felt or something else as an added barrier but maybe I  am just making tooo big a deal...don't know.  Thought just incase someone using SIPs may be thinking of incorporating ZIPs also, that is why I stuck it in this forum.

Lisa,

We at Eco-Panels offer both the wall and roof ZIP system sheathing on our panels and have had positive results. On Huber's website they say to follow the metal roofing companies guidelines for installation and have a video to better explain the ZIP system roof sheathing advantages. As for applying another layer of protection (felt or titanium paper) it is not needed, unless it makes you feel safer. If you plan to put on an additional layer, it may be best to go with OSB (less cost) and just put your paper over top of that. As for metal roofing over an EPS panel, you may need to add a radiant barrier and have a very anti-reflective paint coating on the metal roofing to avoid compromising the sytrofoam. When using a polyurethane panel this is not a concern.

Hope this helps.

Lisa ,Down here in Florida we have been using the zip systems ,Roof,Wall ,and Floor boards from when they 1st can out on the market. When I am forced to do wood construction I use the zip system,with spray insulation behind it to bond decking boards to trusses and one great R value....We always use a membrane between the metal roof and the zip decking boards.I normaly only build my structure shells with steel SIPS,But Have always used a membrane under steel roofing weather it be ZIPS or SIPS.And with the storms here in florida NONE have had any problems or leaks...
