Hi,

It has been suggested that SIPs pricing in Ontario, Canada (or perhaps Canada in general) is higher than SIPs pricing in the U.S..

Can anyone confirm this? If it is true, are there suggestions for obtaing better pricing as a Canadian buyer? Is it possible/practical to order your SIPs from a U.S. manufacturer/distributor?

Any insights would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Justin

Justin,

The American Price is Higher, when you calculate the change rate, brokerage, etc

We make shore that our prices are competitive, if not, the American would eat us alive.

And we provide on job site support that our friends does nt offer, and plus plus plus.

Personally I don't believe it is, or if it is then not by a wide margin.

In the past couple of weeks I took the time to compare at least 4 or 5 different SIPs based on a 4x9' or 4x10' 6.5" blank panels, and they're all similar in price in the range of CAD$4.25-$5.00/sqft FOB Toronto depending on quantity, as delivery costs can vary the $/sqft significantly if you're not taking delivery of a large order.  I don't think that's higher than ordering a panel in the US and trucking it up.  The panels I used in my current project (went up a few weeks ago) is from Insulspan, but I'm investigating into possible alternatives for our upcoming project later on this year, just to keep my options open.

Also consider the building department and how they will handle your permit; having it locally sourced (even if it's a US panel) and working with the distributor will make that process that much smoother, as they can engineer it for you for the building department (for a fee).

Good to know Victor. Did you do some comparison shopping before going with Insulpan? Does pricing within Ontario vary much among competing manufacturers?

I did some comparision in terms of general pricing of what some have paid in the US, but not specifcally for this job.  We ended up with Insulspan in this instance because the floor and roof trusses were supplied by the same company.

But the pricing I alluded to is based on FOB Toronto on pricing that I researched in the past 30 days from at least 4 different SIP manufacturers, as I'm heading into the next project in late spring/early summer, and wanted to expand my options a bit.

If you want to discuss, shoot me a private message with your contact info; you're more than welcome to drop by to take a look; ongoing project is at Yonge/407.

Guys, our SIP panels are around $4.50/sq ft but they arrive at the site fully processed and ready for assembly. I haven't found anybody in North Ameria that can provide fully engineered, fully processed panels ready for assembly for let than $7.50. 10.25" and 12.25" roof panels are pennies more.

Please contact me for more information. We're taking Canada by storm.

We also offer a patented coating system that (for approx $1.50 per sq ft of panel) increases the thermal resistance by 40%. This is huge technology and is changing everything.

IB Panels sells through the SIP Store based out of Jerome, ID

http://www.thesipstore.com/index.php?p=product&id=32&parent=2

The cost of 8" thick 4' x 10 foot basic panel is $158.08 or about $4.00 US per sq ft. Spline options extra.

This is the only panel manufacturer that I can find that gives basic prices online.

Delta Form, what product do you represent that sells for $4.50 a sq ft "fully engineered, fully processed panels ready for assembly"?

Are these recylced SIPS?  How does this affect their structural integrity or would these just be used as nonstructural sheathing panels?

many are new, were shipped to Arizona and sat in field for 2 years, 3 home kits were used as displays (never lived in ) then disasembled and shipped with other panels as a lump sum package purchase

Hi Justin.... be extremely careful.... I gave a $45,000 deposit to a company that are out of Quebec, that told me they were in New Brunswick, and met on this site, this was great as I am in the Maritimes....they have had my plan since Feb March...for a May delivery then June then next week, Then Fri or Mon then July then the first week in Aug ( my engineer has not receive 1 structural drawing from him in the 3 months he has waited) ... until I pulled the plug... I wanted out since late June...I had a P.I. go to the factory this week... and they found maybe 1/2 to 3/4 of wall panels done or various stages of readiness.... but no columns, no dormers, no roof. no large headers, no beam... and all of them are not certified or engineer stamped...
He will not give me my $45,000 back or that worth in engineer stamped panels ... he want me to give him more money... he wont say how much...he just says the whole amount ( could that be the whole amount including the missing pieces.. he wont say) he just keeps repeating the whole amount before ANYTHING leaves his shop ....or even before he will tell me how many panels he has done and could be stamped and he wants it BEFORE the panels leave the shop in Quebec, not upon delivery and inspection...
He also wants to talk on the phone and not in writing.
I would be happy to send you even yesterdays emails or all of them and you make your own decision on if you would like to deal with this company.
I believe SIPS is the wave of the future, it solves a multitude of problems, labour shortages, energy costs etc and still firmly believe in this product... I even wanted to sell the product...I would have loved to have a SIPS house...
I might suggest to the powers that be.... that this issue be addressed..... so one bad apple does not spoil the whole bunch... and have forums... not here because he is here....where the average consumer can go to learn what to expect... in the SIPS buying/ building process ... even a general industry standard...
dont be like me, living in a travel trailer on site staring at a foundation that was started months ago, waiting for a house pkg that never comes and fearing the loaming Maritime winter!
Check it out ....make sure the panels are certified...check it out and the interprovincial and cross border judicial systems, check it out.... I know now that there are reputable companies out there and was dealing with one to start.... but this company said they could do it a few weeks faster..... I guess anyone can see how thats working!!!            Pam

Dear Pam, say the all story please, first we never told you we where from New Brunswick, we are register here as a cie from Quebec, Canada, you calles us, soo you should have seen that we are from Quebec, our website is written from Quebec, every time we wrote here, we wrote we where from Quebec, You can verify on every time we wrote here, soo that is false, New Brunswick has some of our distributor, igave you name and that is all we did.

Secondly, it is true that you began your plan in march, but you only sent us contour line on one page of a very potential complicated house, and you agree on that at that time, then you pass thrue 3 different drafters, that you ask them to draw your house and always incompleted, even 2 weeks ago, you hire a forth drafter to change the size and the look of your house.

At the end of june we receive a copy of plan incompleted, and from your pressure, we decide to redraw your house in 3 D with solid work, to find the info missing in your plan, we found that it wasn't enough for your need, we bought hsbcad and hire the teacher to draw the details of your house, and to whoom knows that program will be inform of the high price of this program but the efficency of it.

So the plan was done with the information of the Engeneer that we gave you in reference for your project, you hire him but 3 weeks ago you told him to stop giving us the information, The plan where ready for him, even if he did not gave us all the information deeded, and even if your demand as look where not structurally sound. We found solution on our side.

It is true that we receive the surprise visit of 2 PI last week, let say we where surprise, we where expecting your husband, no matter what, they ask us to take picture of the panels, we let them take it, and answer all the questions they asked. They left the shop happy with what they had.

You ask us to stop working on your panels, we did, for the rest is between you and us, we never refuse to cooperate with you, but let say the way you do things are a lot special, even using this forum for your vendetta, we only want to be certain to be paid, that is all, we did everything to protect your interest, even redraw your plan in 3 D, with half the info...soo please, stop bragging on internet, talk too us, or ask your lawier to talk to us, continuing this will only getting on yourself a diffamatory pursuit.

Soo please stop that.

Pierre

Just thought I would add some info to this forum. You can investigate all of the SIP manufacturers throughout North America and you'll find that comparing apples to apples is the biggest job. You'll also find that there is marginal differences in price from supplier to supplier. SIPs are really a basic building component...OSB, Adhesive and EPS foam. The difference in pricing is usually seen in (a) processing for assembly, (b) supply and processing of structural elements such as splines and headers and (c) shpping. Shippng of SIPs is expensive; they are light weight and take up a lot of space and other than lucking out and finding a supplier close to your building site there is virtually no way to decrease the shipping cost. HOWEVER, from my experience there is a much more important aspect to be considered...ASSEMBLY EXPERIENCE. When you consider that an untrained and inexperienced assembly team can take as much as 3 to 5 times longer to assemble a SIP package you will see that there is substantial savings to be realized by hiring an experienced team. This combined with a SIP package that has been "accurately" precut will result in the lowest cost SIP package available. Because of this we have changed our business model and we now insist on providing the SIP package with assembly (any where...globally). Even if you are planning to provide your own assembly labour there is much to be gained in terms of time and quality by having a professional assemble your home. ([email protected])

This has not been our experience......... while we offer installed shells as well, SIPs systems may initially intimidate a regular framing crew, we have consulted with framers and DIY owners in the US and Caribbean. Usually after day one they get the "gist of it" and no longer need our assistance
