I would like to build a second story on my late 50's 2 x 4 framed single story ranch. House is 24' x 40' with a 2' x 13' bump out on the back corner. (kinda like a really stubby "L"). Would really like to do SIP walls with a truss roof. I've never heard of anyone using SIPs in this manner and was wondering if it might create some type of load problem or if there was some other reason why this isn't common. Thanks, Mat

SIPS are the opposite of a load problem. Wood skinned SIP walls weigh less per square foot than a conventional wood frame wall. If you are talking about metal SIP walls, they are even lighter than the wood SIPs. I think SIPs are an ideal choice for a second story additon to a wood framed home.

You should also do the roof in SIPs. It will weigh less than a trussed roof. Weight of materials is definitely a factor when adding load to existing wood frame walls.

Great, thanks for clearing the air. Now for the tough part... any recommendations for a SIP supplier in the Rhode Island area??
