Chris,

Is that a tile roof on the home? Does the metal SIP roof have to be reinforced to hold the weight of a Spanish Tile/Concrete Tile roof?

What kind of exterior finish are they planning on?

Peter,
stone coated metal tile, but I have used concrete tiles on the roofs before, Take a closer look, the walls are white stucco, trims are not yet painted

The white gets sort of washed in the photo detail and it's hard to tell if it was the SIP or a stucco finish. Is that an EIFS stucco?

How thick are those SIPs?

My concern is two fold. Firstly, I don't think that fan has the oomph to do the job in that great room. Secondly, it just LOOKS too small in there. Folks on my build will tell you there is nothing I hate more than a change order, once something is done, but I'd do it for that fan. The BigAss fan continues to be one of the major WOW factors on my build. I'll try to remember to get an image today.

ICF,
The fan is actually 6 ft wide which is enormous for a residential fan,
I think the problem is the ceiling treatment is a lot larger

This is a BigAss Fan in an atrium about 16 feet across.  The fan blades are located at just under 30 feet off the ground and it is a 10 foot diameter fan.  It is taped in plastic to guard against dust and paint overspray.

They make great fans. They recommend running them at low speed during winter in rooms with high ceilings to circulate the air and keep the warm air from pooling at the top.

With residential steel SIP construction, is the EPS foam treated with borates and fire retardants?

Do the steel SIPs come with a fire rating?

Lbear,
I cannot generalize for all steel SIP manufacturers,
as far as I know:
all use fire redardant foam
not all use borates and some charge extra for it
none have a fire rating, but steel is non combustible.
most comply with the UL 1715 (UBC 26-3 )Fire Test

The panels quoted to your job have retardants and borates and comply with UL 1715

Chris,

Thanks for the info! So with the ASTM E108-04 Fire Rating it is a Class B roof, correct? That is the bare SIP without another roofing protection layer on top?

Do the borates, fire retardants and tests apply for the 2LB foam also?

Chris,

What do you guys do in the HVHZ areas? The 2010 Florida Building Code really went crazy and made areas like Dade County a 180MPH wind zone. I can only see concrete/masonry structures being able to withstand those types of winds.

Lbear,
Once you go ver 140 mph a rediron frame clad with panels is needed, I don't like doing business in Dade County ,
but a freind of mine recently did a 180 mph in the keys

Is there a particular benefit to cladding with SIPs when something else (steel frame, concrete, and/or masonry) is providing the weight-bearing structure?  Is it cost effective compared to more traditional ways of insulating those structures?

Yes,
a least 50% more energy efficient,
there is nothing conventional @ 180mph
