Hi,

I'm designing a new home for my wife and me. I've general contracted a previous house, but this would be my first time working with SIPs. I've read through the forums, and it's a great source of info.

We're designing a basic contemporary shell, and I have a few questions about rooflines. I've attached a rough elevation for our home. It has one shed roofline on the left, and a gable roofline on the right.

I have two questions:
1) Are there any issues mating a gable roofline against the wall that supports the shed roof. It would meet roughly where I've indicated.
2) Is there any ways that I should modify these rooflines/elevations to make it easier for SIP construction?

We are considering OSB or metal sips.

This is the view from the south, and we intend to create a solar passive house. My wife and I both work from home and the second floor is used for two offices. Mine will be on the south side, but her office will be on the north. She's a watercolor painter, so north light is less harsh to paint under.

We needed two offices upstairs and we both wanted windows, which is why we didn't run the gable roof all the way across. We'd like to avoid skylights or small dormers, and keep the rooflines simple.

Thanks for any advice. Other than those requirements, we're rather flexible, and we're just in the planning stage.

The height to the bottom of the shed roof, the left side, is 12 foot.
Height of shed roof peak is 20 foot.
Gable roof is 16 foot at peak, with a 12/12 pitch (for now).
Overhangs are not drawn.

jtcarrol,
there is no issue with the intersecting roof as long as the wall is supported down below with a beam or wall

Chris,

Thanks for the response. It is supported. That is the location where the kitchen ends (under the second floor in the shed roof portion) and the open dining room/living room begins (under the gable roof). There is a post directly behind the island that supports the second floor and the ridge beam for the gable roof. I hope it will also provide a mounting surface for the range hood over the island.

May I ask, it seems both of you operate in the south, but are either of you familiar with metal SIP manufacturers that could service Missouri? I've attempted to contact SIPSupply, but having difficulties getting a quote back. Fir OSB panels, I'm speaking with Thermocore of Missouri.

Thanks for any assist,
Jeff

For metal SIPs with polyurethane cores, see http://www.kingspanpanels.us/produc...industrial and http://www.leepinc.com/    Leep Inc makes a very strong panel but length is limited to 12.  Kingspan is in Deland, FL and Leep is in Somerset, KY so freight should be included with the quote.  Contact Chris Kavala about SIPs manufactured in Georgia.
