I'd appreciate some general advice here, and I'm on a deadline, or I would be doing a lot more research first. Comparing quotes from conventional stick build vs. SIPs for an addition to my home (workshop, bedroom with 500 qf ft heated space and carport, cathedral ceilings in carport and heated space). SIP vendor uses timber frame supported T&G ceiling. Understand that SIPs will entail some additional cost but know long term efficiency is better. Understand that timber frame is non-comparable additional cost. Also stronger which is important with all the trees around my house. $43K quote from SIP, $26K from conventional. I know that this will be a tighter structure with lower costs, but this seems like a big difference. What kinds of questions do I need to be asking to be able to make legit comparisons? Thanks. FYI, I am reading the articles in the Learning Center.

One question would be what exactly does the conventional framing quote include? Is insulation part of that 26K? If yes then does it compare in R-value? Are you in an area that will benefit from the extra strength that SIP provides?

And ask your conventional building what they do for air sealing and can they guarantee a target blower door performance number...actually a good question for both.

And of course, ask for references for both and check them!
