Dana,
no power went out at 10 pm Sunday night , heard transformers blowing up all over,
we have a 15 kw standby generator, (propane fuel)
it powers our AC, most lights, refrigerator, microwave, wifi , TV , tankless propane hot water(all the bare necessities) gas company just topped off tanks today, we should be good for another 5 days

installed it after hurricane Charlie 2004 and has only been needed once for a 45 minute outage a few years ago, but we keep it maintained and it auto- exercises once a week

One of the guys on my beer-league ski team has a similar propane fired backup generator for power outages related to blizzards & ice storms and the occasional New England hurricane. Being located in the tall woods up a 1/4 mile driveway, it has seen more than just handful of days use since it was first installed ~20 years ago. Seems like once every 3- 5 years it gets a bit of run-time, and he's glad to have it.

I hope the grid comes back up in your neighborhood soon. It's looking pretty dire in the Keys and and other parts of SW FL, with major substation damage in some locations.

Chris, Just curious how you think newer homes held up with the new codes. I was in Homestead two days after Andrew and will always remember the damage. It seems the newer homes down in the Keys held pretty good considering. David

David, I agree that the homes built under the newer codes did better too
