1) Water heating energy consumption is nearly linearly dependent upon number of residents. In round numbers in my area, each person's hot water usage burns about $100 / year if produced with resistance heat. A heat pump water heater cuts that to $30, saving $70 per year. Therefore a 1-2 person household will take much longer to recover the additional cost of an HPWH than will a 3-4 person household.

4) I'm quite OK with moderate sized chest freezers, ideally within conditioned space - the savings and convenience garnered by bulk food shopping and cooking overcomes the additional electricity usage.

5) A typical gas range puts just 25% of the heat of combustion into the cooking pot or pan. The other 75% is dissipated into the kitchen, a complete waste of fuel and a large additional heat load burden on the AC system. In addition, significant water vapor is a product of gas combustion, and that adds unwanted latent load. Finally, there are indoor air / environment quality issues with burning gas, and as houses get tighter these become more of a concern.

Curt, thanks.

I think #5 is like #1 - it's an economics analysis.

Here in Texas average cost for gas in 2013 was 3.9 cents/kWh (restated).  That's a lot of electric stove usage, regardless of how efficient one might say an electric stove is.

Best regards,

Bill
