FYI, I typed in ductless mini split into the youtube search bar and there were some good videos to view showing the in's and out's of the ductless.

Our new house is going to have a seperate detached "game room" building, approx 600sf. Would it be a good idea to go with a mini-spit in this small building rather than a conventional system?

This would be a great option. Getting a small heat pump would be ideal with a wall unit and would be the least expensive. if you look online for ductless depot or go ductless.com you can see what a small system with 1 unit would cost. ANy of the major brands would be fine. Fujitsu, mitsubishi or daikin.

schmausser;

I have used a Ramsond heat pump(9000btu) ...1 unit handling 528 sq. ft. on 2 levels, th e units come precharged and prewired and are idiot proof to install

Can anyone explain to me why ductless mini split air conditioners units are any more efficent that window air conditioners? I understand that the system is composed of an outdoor unit, an indoor mounted evaporator unit, but i fail to see how this can be any more efficent than a window air conditioner with both of those parts intergrated into the same unit.

ntvin986;  welcome!

3 reasons:

1.   Mini splits only require a small dia. hole in wall for refrigerant and electrical connections. making sealing easier than a unit in a window frame.

2.   They can be mounted on any wall for maximum effectiveness

3.   Heat pumps have greater SEER ratings available

Having a window AC unit is also a security issue. It is much easier to break-in.
