Yes, it is an insurance issue. Where hail is a major problem insurers look for ways to avoid paying claims. One of those ways in TX, blessed by state regulators, is to tell a policyholder with a beat-up steel roof is to come back when it leaks. I don't know what the rules are in OK but I know for a facr OK is not FL or AZ.

Structural strength and impact resistance are not the same thing. What happens when you tap a steel sip with a ball peen hammer? Yes, steel sips are superior to osb in any roofing system. In TX anyway, I'd want roofing over it that my insurance policy will replace after a major hail storm.

toddm,
I just tapped one and nothing happened
I never suggested to you that you leave a steel SIP uncovered, it can only be done with simplistic roofs (no valleys)
it can never be done with OSB SIPs,
for my taste it looks too industrial and If I would recommend it, it would be for:
1. a warehouse
2. A residential roof for economy reasons, affordable housing
3. low sloped roof , residential or commercial where it is not visable
The nice thing about the steel SIP is that it can be functional for economical reasons, but they always have the option to be covered with a secondary roof for cosmetic purposes.
wether or not they would get dented by hail, I guess it would depend on the size of the hail? 2" hail would be Aesthetically catastrophic for any roof, but then I have never experienced "golf" ball sized hail and am guessing it is as rare as "baseball" sized hail

I'd rather not make a career of this:

1. OK is not FL or AZ. From this blog, complete with map: http://4029weather.wordpress.com/2012/03/28/some-hail-basics-severe-weather-season/

"This is a graphic I took from the National Severe Storms Laboratory. This map represents the probability of 2 inch size hail or greater. Look at the bullseye across central and western Oklahoma!"

2. This is, as you say, an insurance issue. Sure you can recover steel SIPs. The question, from my first post, is who pays? For the last time, one hopes, if the guy wants to put steel roofing over steel sips he should find out if insurance will replace it if the damage is only cosmetic. If the answer is no, more research is in order.

Yea hey guys, this wasn't meant to get into over hail protection or whether or not the SIPs should have a covering over them. I personally have my own plan for a covering layer of shingles for aesthetics. Chris has said himself in other posts that he puts shingles on steel SIP roofs all the time. However the intent of this post was for information regarding steel SIP manufacturer and dealer locations, not to get into insurance coverages of uncovered steel SIPs.

You'd be fine in TX with asphalt shingles, as I mentioned in my first post, and I am sure in OK as well. Didn't mean to hijack the thread. But you can't talk roofing in the plains states without considering hail.

I agree. Hail is certainly an issue in Oklahoma as well. I appreciate the consideration.
