What is the average cost of professional termite treatment per sq.ft. and are there any DIY methods or do I have to hire a professional.  I have read that boric acid is one of the best treatments and I know I can purchase it without a license. Would sprinkling or spraying forms with Boric acid solution be helpful. Would Boric Acid be suitable for soil treatment prior to footer and slab install?  Do I need to install additional metal termite barriers?  I am Owner/Building a 24' X 32" single story with 10'  tall 6" wide  Fold-Form ICF walls in southside VA. Termites exist in area but would not say infestation is a problem.

Thanks

Building codes here in FL do not allow self treatment for termites. Licensed professionals must do the work and provide a stamp or sticker posted on the job for inspection purposes. We have used boric acid treatment on framing but it would seem that boric acid would not last long in ground. Maybe another reader can help with this info. GR

Borate is a great material, but not meant to be used in contact with the ground. The Borate is drawn to water. It will leach. Used above grade it is great. Bound to have less "long lasting" problems than most other products being used to treat lumber. If you use it to treat the foam use it on the inside. I don't believe that you will get away with it in Florida. check your building department.

I can't comment specifically on the foam part, because we did not worry about it -- all our foam is at least 1 foot off the ground, ending at the stone covered, concrete grade beam.

For all the wood -- door frames/bucks to 2 feet up, windows bucks (all PT wood), thresholds, porch beams, porch header attached to grade beam, etc. etc., I sprayed (twice) with Bora-Care at framing stage. It's a gel-based product that you mix with water and use a pump-sprayer with. It is absorbed by the wood and becomes "fixed" in the cellular structure of the wood. Anything that ingests it -- termites, wood borers, wood rot fungus -- dies.
