I've built several SIP homes as a panel erector sub, but now I'm about to build my first SIP home as a builder. I can't find any information on the mechanical ventilation/ air exchangers. We are building in Orlando, Fl and want to know if anyone out there can steer us in the right direction.

Ron, the go-to info source for home ventilation strategies and systems is UNDERSTANDING VENTILATION by John Bower (812-332-5073). It gives you the basic info on which to base your system choice. It also gives you a fair amount of info on actual product choices.

Since you are building in Orlando, Bower would tell you that you'll want a heat-recovery ventilator that provides humidity control. Reason: if the device can transfer moisture between the incoming and outgoing airstreams, the air conditioner won't have to work as hard. The HRV core pulls moisture out of the incoming fresh air and tranfers it into the exhaust air stream. As of a few years ago, Bower indicated that a desiccant-coated core is most efficient at this water vapor transfer process.

Thanks for the info, Steve. I'll be sure to start there. I'd also like to hear from any builders for their input on what they have used. We are building a very basic affordable model, 24' x x48', gable end, no garage, 4br, 2 bath. we are just now starting to meet with the county building dept (not very open minded), we;ll keep you posted.
Our three biggest areas we need help in are: sizing and type of HVAC system, air exchanger and energy calc's(needed to get a building permit). So if anyone out there can help, HELP!!!!
Thanks again Ron Furnival

Ron, one other thought: you might contact researcher Danny Parker at the Florida Solar Energy Center for his perspective on generic performance of ventilation products. (407-638-1001) They've always been on the leading edge of research and performance in your neck of the woods.
