Dear List Members,
We are in the process of having our home repaired from water/mold damage. I have severe copd, allergies and also some chemical sensitivities. So in regards to the restoration we are not only trying to go green but also non-toxic. One of the concerns I have is finding insualtion that is safe for me. I'm concerned about traditional fiberglass insulation most versions off-gas formaldehyde and also fiberglas isn't safe for people with lung problems. I've recently become aware of the demilec spray foam prodcuts which are interesting to me in that it is sustainable, but I see no information that says it is non-toxic. Does anyone have any information regarding that? Or are you aware of any other spray foam or other type of insualtion product that you can recommend as non-toxic and also effective in it's R-value and a good insualtor that is not mold friendly? I'm interested in having our crawl space, at least one gutted room insulated. We are also looking for non-toxic insualtion prodcuts for our hvac systems which are going to be replaced. We are opting to have metal air ducts. Any information would be most appreciated.

Costs about one buck/sq ft/per inch high.
Did you say Mold? Find and fix that problem..it won't go away until you fix it.

You owe it to yourself to look at AirKrete
It is mineral based foam and is not just urethane foam with a little soy based surfactant in it like the soy or so-called bio-foams.
It certainly is not straight urethane like the tigerfoam product suggested.
If Airkrete cannot help you I would maybe be able to help. |

We are currently working on a house for a client with severe chemical sensitivities and mold allergies we are replacing with steel where possible, where this is not possible we are treating wood with Safe Encasements Elastomeric SE 130 for mold protection and adding steel drywall hat channel to isolate the wood and spraying the area with Corbond, a two part urethane closed cell foam. The Corbond effectively seals everything into the wall and prevents any air or moisture infiltration into the space. The one thing I would be aware of is that the Safe Encasement and the Corebond is not odor free until it cures at which point the Corbond is quite odor free. We are lucky to be in a situation where we can vent the space before it is occupied. We will often use Bio Based soy foam, more sustainable, but it is an open cell foam very good product, but does not do as good a job at sealing everything up.
Nontoxic is a matter of degrees, every product should be tested for sensitivity before it is used our client reacted to several products that were marketed for chemical sensitive individuals. The other issue is availability you have to check if there are installers who work with AirKrete, Bio Based or Corebond in your area. If you do not have any local installers it can drive up the price. We don't have Air Krete installers in our area so I am not that familiar with the product.
Metal ducts are a good idea for your HVAC system. You want to make sure that your HVAC contractor uses mastic to seal all of the connections of the duct work and if possible have them test the ductwork for air leakage with Duct Blaster which is a calibrated measuring device that tests for duct leakage. This is especially important if your duct work is installed in the crawl space as there are all kinds of things living down there you do not want in your air. |
