I'm building a home in central KY, where we typically spend more on AC than heating. The house will be earthbag on the first floor and polyurethane SIPs on the second floor and roof. The second floor is 24' x 24' and will have a hip roof with a 12/12 pitch (slightly geometric). Inside it is mostly open (cathedral ceiling) and there is a simple timberframe with two laminated gothic arches that criss-cross in the middle, which will mostly hold up the second floor, but also will provide some support for the roof. If you aren't completely confused by my word painting, my questions are:
  • What is the most reasonable way to get R-50 in the roof?
  • Is it better to use a miter joint or a lap joint on the ridges? (My guess is miter, but I'm wondering if it poses problems for assembly.)
  • Does it make sense to use a radiant barrier over SIPs (under the roofing)?

That should be enough to get an interesting conversation started.

Also, the owner of the new PUR SIP factory here in KY is willing to experiment and do anything he can with his 8' x 12' press, like variations in thickness, so I could even do two layers of thinner SIP's with an airspace between.

Thanks,

Thom

Wes,

In Wolfe County, Willy Spangler has a factory for PUR SIPs.  He's got some pretty cool innovations for wiring and will even frame out openings and doors at no extra cost because the extra work is covered by the savings in foam.  His phone number is 606-663-9702.  He is a very approachable person and willing to work with the client.

Hope that is helpful to you.

Thom

Gondolaguy,  I would appreciate the chance to talk with you about your upcoming project.  I work for a manufacturer out of Louisville.  We have been making our panels for 20 years and all are 3rd party tested.  Please let me know if I can be of any assistance with your project.

Dear Louie,
Thanks for your interest in my project.  I am familiar with your product, as both Berea College and one of my neighbors has used them.  Both give good reviews.  However, I'm more interested in the PUR SIPs which Willy makes.  I'd be glad to hear your thoughts, however.

Best regards,
Thom
