I'm now the proud owner of a new Water Furance 4 ton system, total run time about 10 minutes, just long enough to see they system is heating and cooling correctly. The system should be ready when I need it in a few months, but for now it's staying off as long as the weather holds. Anyway, I was just wondering how heavy Geothermal systems were per ton of capacity? Obviously a 4 ton system doesn't weigh 4 tons, although I didn't have an industrial scale handly to double check figures, the guys who moved my unit from the truck into my basement estimated the weight of the unit about 800 pounds, so if it's a 4 ton unit, that would make it about 200 pounds per ton. Is this a correct assumption? It might be handy to someone planning on installing a large system to know the wieght of it and make a plan for moving it.

A six ton Hydron unit weighs 410 lbs. The chart below shows the weights for various sizes

Shipping weight averages close to 400 lbs with packing for most sizes. All are heavy. Ton refers to btus absorbed by 1 ton of ice melting in 24 hours. I know you knew that TG, just threw it in for others. j

I bet they just wanted you to think they were really strong by moving 800 pounds :) The heaviest unit we have installed was a 12 ton water to water unit. It weighed 660 pounds. We showed up on the job with a box of donuts and bribed some of the framers to help.
