Does anyone know of a cheap way to protect the waterproof membrane (peel and stick type) from rocks, etc during backfill. I would like to use something but don't know what to use.

Get a good Backhoe operator. They can usually ensure, for the most part, that larger rocks will not hit the wall and puncture the membrane. We use a man to shovel loose sand to protect the wall, as the backhoe operator slowly places the backfill by letting it sift through the teeth of the bucket.

| There are a variety of products on the market....Everything from fanfold foam board to plain cardboard. You may want to use a drainboard/backfill protection board for cheap insurance against leakage. BE SURE TO USE SOMETHING. The backfill protection board helps you in more than one way. It should protect the membrane from cuts and punctures during backfill operations, and it also acts as a bond breaker between the membrane and the soil...this is necessary because as the backfill settles, it will pull the membrane down the wall...leaving wrinkles, tears etc. for water and bugs to go right into the wall. Spend the $$ now, it costs a lot more to dig up etc. 6 months down the road. |

Ian, what drain board are you using, is it similar to the grooved Celfort product.

| There are a variety of backfill protection and drain boards available on the market. Most of the products have limited availability due to distribution limitations. We pretty much stick with Polyguard Products' low flow 15. This product looks like a heavy mil felt that protects the membrane as well as acts as a drainage layer. Meadows, Grace etc. all have products that will perform these functions. Your best bet is to visit a local concrete accessories store to see what they carry. If you are building basements and waterproofing them, you are crazy not to use these products....kind of like putting a bolt into a hole and leaving the nut and washer off....eventually it will fall out... |

We are the concrete store, and we have access to a fair number of systems from EPS XPS, rigid fiberglass, to plastic moulded sheets, woven cloth products and channel systems. I will elabourate on the last question. What is the best type of drainage/protection system to use. We have done peel and stick with rigid fiberglass, moulded plastic, channel, and drainboard XPS systems. My concern is the termites, any mechanical damage, and durability. Help!!!
