We moved into our 30 year old home with radiant heat 2 months ago. I am in Green Bay, WI. We have gas heat - and our bill is over $600!!! for January. I know we need a hot water heater (how long should one last any how?) and new windows. But how about a boiler? how long should one of those last?
I hear running water all the time - is there air in the system? It sounds like a running river!
Thanks for any help or any web sites/books you could suggest.

is your home made of air? it sounds like you are loosing the battel to heat green bay. inulation is the key. that bill could buy me groceries for a long time!.listen one time. unless your house is about 20,000 sq' you have definite insulation concerns.

listen one more time. if the sound you hear is like water it means you donot have enough water IN the boiler. the best thing to do is have a spirovent installed. yup spirovent. see, air in the pipe doesnt let the heat conduct itself properly:)that was scientific layman. real quick...water carries the heat and distributes it to where we want it to be, in a hydronic heating system.air in the system just collects at the best place it can get to to get out of the system. this can cause air locks and the water is no longer being re distributed hence the heat never makes it to where we want it to be.so...the boiler room is like 210 in the shade and every where else is unsatisfied therefore it does its best to heat the entire house from there ! to put it another way the heat plant is running itself into the ground!its iron or steel so it will out live us in this adventure.remember boiler spirovent and a fast fill check the recirc pump.. send me the change:) have a good day.
