I have a 1955 Eichler house in the SF Bay Area. The original in-slab hydronic system is defunct. The slab had settled severely, so we have cut it out, and we now want to replace it with a new hydronic system. Our options are:

1. Put PEX piping in the new slab.

2. Install radiant heat panels over the top of the new slab.

We'd prefer the second choice because it appears to be much more efficient, but our contractor says that all the radiant heat panel systems require that the panels cannot float and must be attached to the slab. He further says that no panels can be attached to the slab because wood cannot come directly into contact with concrete.

My questions are:

1. Are there any radiant heat panel systems that can float on top of the slab?

2. Is there any way to attach radiant heat panel systems to the slab?

Any advice would be much appreciated.
