I'm planing on adding a second story to my home in Queens NY. The new addition consist of adding about 1000 square feet of living space. The current heating system is steam heat with a very old cast iron oil boiler which i'm planning to replace with a gas fire boiler. Can someone please advise me on the following questions:
1) Is it possible to use the exsisting steam radiators on the first floor with radiant heating on the second floor using the same gas boiler?
2) if so, how do you get the hot water to run thru the pex tubing, do you need some type of water pump?
3) What boiler would you recomend for this system? I'm looking for a high efficiency boiler with a small footprint.
Thank you in advance for your help on this.

I'm not actually sure about running water through steam radiators.. I never come across steam radiators, strangely enough.
I can say if you go hydronic that yes, you will need some pumps. And unless those radiators or their replacements can be run at low temperature like the radiant needs, you will probably need a mixing system as well.
If you can get the radiators or their replacements to work at low temperature, then a modulating/condensing boiler is a no-brainer. Every manufacturer has one now. They are usually wall hung, silent, direct venting, sealed combustion, and stupidly efficient on low temperature systems. Might still be a good choice for a two temperature system as well.
Hope that helps (and hope someone who knows steam stops by!).
