I received a few PMs as a result of my engagement in the Loop Performance thread, all asking various questions specifically on WEL implementation.  So as to not dilute the excellent dialog in the Loop Performance thread, to efficiently answer the questions, and to offer opportunity to all to see the comments, I thought I'd answer the PMs here via a new thread.

The monitoring unit I'm using (Web Energy Logger) is described here: http://www.welserver.com/ .  It's not much bigger than a deck of cards ( http://welserver.com/images/WEL33openbox.jpg ), requires no s/w installation, and is fully operational with Internet accessible charts immediately upon connection to your home network.

Many creative examples of WEL implementations start here: http://welserver.com/ww/ .

My specific implementation is here: http://welserver.com/WEL0043/ . Pictures illustrating my implementation and usage are here: http://www.pbase.com/neukranz/gshpinstall .

Various cost options for the WEL unit are here: http://welserver.com/store.htm .

Temperature sensors needed to monitor various metrics, like EWT, are these:  http://welserver.com/images/TSENSE_ENC.jpg or these: http://welserver.com/images/raw_sensors.jpg (depending upon how much of a DIY person you are).  It's pretty straight forward to connect them up to the WEL.

Hope this helps.  Holler if any questions.

Best regards,

Bill

Bill, if I didn't know better, I might suspect you of being the owner of the WEL company. But of course I do know better.

Thanks for your informative posts and willingness to help.

Dewayne, thanks.

I don't have any relationship to the owner, or the business.

I do believe that I'll get everything in life I want if I just help enough other people - everyone.

Best regards,

Bill

AHH the wel,

We have one on order to test and see if we like them. As a side note this was brought about over a disscussion/debate over loop efficiency. We are in the process of compiling bulk data about ground loops on the Delmarva Penninsula. ewt after heating season and ewt after cooling season. It is my theory that using the 200' per ton swag hear results in loop fields that only vary by a couple of degrees one way or the other resulting in no shoulder months, and eer and cop identical to a raw water system.
Stay tuned.

Eric, your EWT values will be at maximum accuracy if you do 5 things:  put temp sensor on metal, not plastic pipe; use thermal grease between sensor and pipe; strongly mechanically fasten sensor to pipe; mechanically wind wire leads around pipe; and well insulate sensor/wire leads from ambient air.

Best regards,

Bill

Bill,

Are you getting a commission? ;)

You also forgot to mention the 'WEL World' map and the great support on the OurCoolHouse forum.

Thank you for all the great help,

Bob G.

Bob, nope, no involvement of any kind.

I really meant to include reference to the world map, as I think the creative examples are quite stimulating on how to use a WEL to essentially understand where your energy costs are being spent causing obvious thought on what to do about it.  Your note caused me to check my original posting where I see I made a mistake with the URL reference for the line "Many creative examples of WEL implementations ..."

The URL should have been http://welserver.com/ww/ .  I also corrected it in my original posting.

Thanks for catching this!

Best regards,

Bill

Hi Bill,

Thanx for the tip on sensor install for ewt.  We plan on hooking up one wel system initially, and since we are at the end of our heating season now I am running around taking ewt via pete's ports to get some baseline data.

What sensors and where should they be installed to determine if your loop is functioning as it should?
