Good point, and this wall still beats code in many regions. The wavy isue with twisted studs is an issue with any wqall. I am concerned as well with the relative flimsyness of 1/2" drywall with a 23" span. Not a huge issue, just feels cheaper and more prone to damage, and showing the dips between the studs. Steel studs rais all sorts of other issues with thermal transmittance, solvable with exterior insulation, but can indeed provide a straighter wall, as can engineered studs that peropl like Trus-Joist are making.

Does anyone have any experience with 2x4 studs with 2x2's run horizontal all 16" oc (Mooney wall)? I'd like to fill the resulting 6" cavity with dense cellulose. Maybe a plastic covering. Seems like the most cost effective - other than the extra labor for the 2x2s. Less thermal bridging.
