we are disabled boomer couple needing solid advice and guidance. i tried to register but due to my sight challenged self and or my browser i cant see to do it so here we go. thanks to admin for letting me post anyway.

the only things we are sure of is sip roof and post framed small open floor plan cabin sanctuary in nothern middle tennessee. small as in 600-800 with simple roof type either gable or pitched shed type roof line with proper eave overhang for use of solar heating cooling. i dont know the term but also like when 2 roof lines come together at different angles and the tall roof has upper windows for venting or solar entry. maybe it is the saltbox type.

to keep cost low as possible im doubtful i can do that roof type. i dont know but the kiss method is most likely best as to not complicate things and add costs.

we embrace all sustainable methods on the lower costs end of things. gray water recycle
solar hot water and such. we will most likely
be DC only solar power with gas fridge freezer and composting toilet and wood heat.
we do it now like this so its not foriegn to us its a necessity. we just will increase our system sizing.

just a dry shell is fine.would like to have sip walls but they might have to be done inside later as we can? even if its just 6x
post frame filled with pink walls its still more efficient than any mobile home. yes?

smallish simple efficient sustainable as possible and close to being on grade due to my blindness and my partners wheelchair bound. she hates ramps even one as good as we have now. but i understand it. openness of floors with sips and post frame is awesome
and perfect for us

small sip roofed solar saltbox sanctuary sure
sounds wonderful. if i can just make it happen. aestetics are not real important to sight challenged persons but i still think even a small footprint square home can be built that looks nice and more importantly is user friendly and very efficient.

thats why i pose these question here in this forum is because you all embrace efficient buildings. and again i sure thank you for allowing me to do so.

anyone willing to help guide us as you can?

best regards and much thanks John and Lesia

I just prepared an estimate for a 20' x 30' cabin in the mountains for a customer. The price was roughly $16k for a complete SIP structure(walls & roof) delivered. He would need to provide the foundation, floor, doors & windows(and of course siding & roofing materials). You could do the same thing for about 1/3 less using raw panels, but you'd have more onsite work to do.

Now, you'd probably need at least a 1 kW PV system to power the lights & fridge, and a solar H/W system that could provide heat and H/W. You'd be set!

If you are looking for the absolute cheapest way to do this, SIPS aren't it. But, using SIPS would reduce your heating load, and make heating with solar much more feasible.

Good Luck!

If you're not building with SIPS, why are you building?...

i sincerely thank you for sharing the info with me jc it helps a lot. especialy the solar heated floor which somehow i had not even seen or thought of. i had thought of fire supression in ceiling but not heated floor. awesome system to consider for sure
depending on its costs. had even thought of froth pac filled oak pallets floor so yes i will sure investigate floor heat solar.

yes a kw of alternative power is my eventual goal. but reality is the rock bottom on everything is what we have to do. it really is enlightening to me on a couple of things so far in this journey. one is the lessened cost of adding on the onset. much easier to build it in from start than add to something. or so it seems to me.

the second is since i got injured.never thought it would be a slowgo tractor to injure me being a drag bike racer for 20+.it is that we really need very little to be happy humans and life changes radically depending how we see or dont see. yep

i also meant to put my email in message if someone wanted to respond off forum. it is beltfedvoodoo@yahoo.com and i did get registered it was my end and quirky screen reader.

very best regards to everyone and thank you with guidance like this i am sure we will make the cabin happen and good as it can be.
