We are in the planning stages of a new home in Wisconsin- approx 2000sqr ft main floor with an exposed basement that will be finished in the future. We are investigating using radiant in the basement only and throughout the house. We are also strongly considering solar for our domestic hot water. I was wondering if anyone has experience with connecting solar into radiant? Drawbacks?
My initial thought was to use solar in combination with radiant if we went with radiant in the basement only. We do not have enough South facing roof space to handle the whole house radiant(the solar contractor is working the numbers, but that was his gut feel). Instead of using an additional hot water heater, maybe use a tankless water heater to produce extra heat the times we would need it?!!
What about experiences with Geothermal and radiant? A heating contractor we talked with last year said the combination was not very cost effective.
If we go with radiant throughout the house, we will probably not be able to afford the solar. We are trying to determine what would be the most cost effective for now and the long term. I do understand that Warmboard is worth the cost, but sometimes choices must still be made!!
Any advice/comments would be welcome.
Thanks!

with solar, I always advise focusing on DHW for year-round benefit, then comparing to a radiant tie-in. That usually means an additional coil in the tank, and some more controls, and so the price and complexity rises a bit doing heating with it as well. DHW solar is cheap and effective and gives the fastest payback. The rest is "extra".
Geo and radiant play well together, and if you are servicing a large load, it can have reasonable payback. The smaller the load, the less it makes sense. Depends on electrical rates in your area as well.
Back up heating is one of the few times I would consider a tankless heater in a radiant system. An extra tank however is generally better and more storage is usually a decent idea with solar as well... your solar contractor should be able to guide you there though.
