We are building a 2-story 3000 sq.ft. home this spring. I have been planning on building with ICFs, but it has been suggested I take a look at EPS panels, such as SIPs (structurally insulated panels) or a steel/EPS foam panel such as that produced by Techbuilt Systems (see www.techbuilt.com). Each system is engineered, and have their advantages, but I am undecided. The advantages:

ICF: strength (10x stronger than panels), high R-values (R-30+), thermal mass, quietness, very energy efficient.

EPS panels: strength (6x stronger than stick-built), high R-values (R-30 walls, R-50 roofs), very quick installation (panels come in lengths up to 34' wide by wall heights to 10'), very energy efficient.

I believe the STC rating on the EPS panels is in the lower 50's, close to the STC 48 of the ICFs.

Anybody have any experience with either system? Any suggestions or caution advice?

I personnally enjoy and use both SIPS and Icf's and frequently use them in concert. I find SIPS much easier to apply the many custom applications that are demanded of me in a custom home. You have overstated the r-values of both systems, but you get the idea. The best thing going in terms of energy efficiency is the tightness of the systems. SIPS are strong less labor than ICFs except for the simplest of building configurations. My opinion. I have place sip roofs on ICF walls and use ICF's in all conditioned foundation spaces. I enjoy structural panels over stud panels with foam in place. They are easier to fabricate and tool in the field and seem to be more accurate to tool as well.

So why is speed a factor, for someone who is building a one time home? So it may take a few days longer to build your home? So you may not be able to afford that vacation in Mexico or where ever the first after building your home. But after that your vacations will be paid for in savings. Let's face it what else can you spend a few thousand bucks on and have it give back to you for many years, or as long as you own it. Witch ever comes first.
