I'm building a new house early summer 2003 and I'm trying to get all my ducks in a row with respect to what technologies, brands, etc. to use/specify in this new house. Family has massive allergies, and I want to finish raising my 4 children, then spend the rest of my life in this house. Hence, I want it very low maintenance.

This has drawn me to concrete building, specifically ICFs. I see how to get all the walls built with ICFs (but these days I'm wondering if perhaps removable forms might be more cost effective). I can see building the first and second floors using some floor system like Lite-Deck (any preferences or recommendations out there?), but the real question I have is how to build the roof out of concrete. I've been speaking with one contractor, and he's recommending Eco-Block for the walls and Lite-Deck for the roof as well. I've contacted Lite-Deck, and the maximum they claim to have seen is a 4/12 pitch. Is a house okay (in NW Arkansas) with a 4/12 pitch roof, or does it need something steeper? Is there a different way to supply a sloped concrete roof? I'm really shooting for a monolithic shell. I also want decorative concrete floors (acid stained), concrete porch, concrete deck, the works.

I can see using steel studs for interior walls, but I really want everything structural to be concrete. I want wood to only be decorative...

Suggestions? Criticism?

Stick to your train of thought Greg, You're
on the right track! Absolutely you can have
the entire structure completed, and I do not
believe the roof slope is limited. My choice
would be amvic walls, with insul-deck floors
and roofing. Check out www.insul-deck.com
Hope this helps, Take-care. Sincerely. C.Kerr

Yes it is easily achievable, and there is a science to it. Any pitch can be poured, and the indoor air quality index you are looking for can easily be generated. However, there is a science to it. This website will describe what and how, and will list a vast array of information and products, associated with this quality of life style you are looking for.
