I am debating how to install a 36" wide door in my icf garage. The door connects the garage to the mud room in the house. I planned on putting the door to the outside of the wall like all the other doors in the house. The other doors are sliders or have 12" sidelites, so the door is free to swing open. This door, will open a little more than 90 degrees because it hits the inside of the jamb. I was thinking of moving the door to the inside of the wall, but then I need to finish the outside of the jamb ( the bottom in particular). What are some of the options to finish the outside of the jamb when tho door is place on the inside?

thanks....Larry

Here in Texas, we suggest that the door buck be oversized by 9" and recommend that the buck be framed in with smaller width (usually 2x6 or 2x4) material so that brick or stone may be returned back to the door frame. This eliminates any wood type trim on the exterior that requires maintenance and it looks better. The sill can be extended with a matching sill extension or brick can be cut to a paver thickness and set across the sill as an added feature. In your case, if the opening is already there, set the door to the inside, trim the buck with something like Hardi and see about getting a sill extension.

Larry,

We had a similar situation on a house we completed this spring. I agree with Ian, but we were hard pressed to find a sill extension deep enough to accomodate the situation. We had to fabricate one sill extension out of two. We had to cut the second to exact size and add it to the original.

As for the buck, if it is in a garage, I would wrap the jambs and header with drywall or 1x material. It depends on the finish of the garage, but these would match our standards.

Good luck,

The aluminum sills are available, we just received 8" flat x 1/4". These do not interlock or attach to the existing sill, they are inserted under the sill with a slight wash and tapconned into the exposed top of wall. The sills are available up to 10".

We have mulled this installation over and decided to create a door buck in the future using 4 sides and sloping the bottom pt 2x for easier installation. As the floor elevations change based on the framing you can make the base 1" lower to allow yourself a little play to get the door and frame in.

The mud room doorway from the garage is a perfect place to plan the doorway to be at one side of the mudroom. That way you can place the frame where you want in the wall and allow the swing to go to the side of the interior wall. If you have a step from the house down into the garage, very typical and makes the code inspectors happy, you can extend your step or landing deck into the wall opening under the door threshhold, sometimes even tieing into the interior deck.
