Snip from other topic ----

Well....not until production plant is established, but it's worth a discussion anyway.

The average age of a house in the UK is around 75 years old, and a good number of them can have very successful attic conversions, although we tend to under- insulate.

In the last 30 years, trussed rafters have meant that at least 10 million in the UK homes cannot have a conversion (easily) because the pitch of the roof is too low and is engineered to minimum standards.

As you rightly pointed out Steve, space is a premium in the UK and a small plot of land (less than 1/10th acre) might cost you over $80,000 if you are lucky enough to find it.

I'm interested in the notion of "Roof Transplants", where the old one comes off and the new higher pitched one goes on, with 30% or so "new" floor space (using SIPs of course!). Bearing in mind the cost of moving, legal fees, stamp duty (1.5% of purchase price), removals, selling fees, it could easily work out 50% cheaper overall.

In the States you have more land available so the roof is of less value to you (sorry to generalise). Personally I think that you pay for a roof be it a lid or whatever, and the additional costs to make it a "living roof" more than justify themselves through the increase in floor space, and by the fact that the attic, with it's unusual lines can easily become aesthetically the best room in the house!
