I would like to ask the member or participants of this forum topic to address where their interest lies in terms of cost cutting. Panel Built brings an interesting point to the discussion. I think it would be good to focus on two distinct areas when debating where to cut costs.
1. The product itself. Does it cost too much to warrant its use? Or how can we bring material costs down. This would be pure market values that would encompass product costs, distribution costs, and support costs.

Products costs pertain directly to how to buy.
Distribution costs may focus on trucking, and getting the product to the jobsite.
Support costs may focus on accurate estimates, panel takeoff (also accurate) and or technical support.

I truly believe this is the area to focus or lobby for cost reductions. I would like to see SIPS priced more competitively and believe that if they were more builders would tend to learn and use SIPS. That is why I used the term lobby. You SIP users should join SIPS and petition this question to the manufacturers and distributors of SIPS.

The other area to cutting cost is in the application of the product which seems to be where most of the responses are coming from. I am very impressed with the amount of expertise out there, and it seems that the ideals that create sucessfull SIPS projects are more than I realized. As a SIP advocate I enjoy this.

I would like to begin more specific addresses to the first grouping if possible.

Ed.
I dont know what your paying for panels but its like the supply and demand thing. If you order a bunch you can get a good cost, If your willing to do your own cut outs and burning you can get cost down. I did read that there is a possability that costs could get better by next year.
I read already that just about all the manufactures are reporting volume of 20 to 50 percent over last year. Just in passing I read a lot of your comments and respect your knowledge in the field. Are you in Grassvalley CA?
How many units to date have you done?

Thanks. I am in Grass Valley. I mostly do custom homes and have done about 100 panels sets in the last ten years. I was a principle in Bantex Building Systems, Have worked for Premier in the early 90's and now am back to building custom SIPS structures. It costs a lot to run ICBO and 3rd party quality control in California. Ever wonder why no panel companies have made it in this state?
